no need to be torn Conscious, indicate status (logged in identity) on the right somehow integrated with messaging, control start/stop session on the left..

Yeah, Gtk should allow the theme to easily change the position
of the tab buttons. How difficult would be patching that? Any
Gtk gurus here? :)

Well, the Shell is supposed to be insanely configurable via
_javascript_ extensions and CSS, so'd be surprised if such
positioning is hardcoded.

hurts.. i stopped coding _javascript_ after a few weeks of experimenting with cheap rollovers about a decade ago.. It's so much more worth learning with GNOME Shell coming at us like this!
