Even with just 3 it would be better, as your previously copied data is still there so you wouldn't be endlessly frustrated.

because it was meant to either be self-explanatory or a hidden treasure
 
2. Have copied items handled by the OS itself and not be application specific, as mentioned before, it is rather irksome to lose copied data after the closure of an application.

+1 (if it's not already the case for most apps)
gedit doesn't exert this behaviour..
which apps do for you? OOo? Firefox?
 
3. Add an entry to the right click dialog that is labeled "Paste Recent." This entry would contain the last 5 or so copied items and have an entry at the bottom to clear the recent copy history.

..and use Zeitgeist for this one, perhaps?
