On the way of 4), I think it would be a bit distracting to change the icon when new contents are managed; copy operations are quite frequent and it's almost always clear for the user that some new data has been copied into the clipboard.

ok, i understand that from a user point of view, thanks for sharing your experience!
In order to make everybody happy in this thread, how about implementing your software indicator-style?

A good example is tomboy-indicator, it shows a recent list in its indicator menu..

Actually, pastie uses the application indicators applet, if that's what you mean (glippy does too). If you want to check it, see https://launchpad.net/~hel-sheep/+archive/pastie

Are you planning to fix the icon ? its not yet monochrome as i can see...
Yes, I'm planning to do that, but in the meanwhile you can put a monochrome icon in ~/.pastie/ (as pastie.svg).

I tried making a symbolic icon for this about a week ago already, an attempt which didn't bear much fruit..
here's a dirty shot at it, i know its not really monochrome yet, but that's all i have for now..
a killall gnome-panel didn't bring up the new icon, but after restarting it appeared, thanks for that again!

seeing it in (pseudo-)monochrome inspires me a lot!
