[Question #214505]: How to make the Ubuntu 12.04 desktop more lightweight and less annoying (with all he popups and their footprint)?

I suspect that the popups that new packages are available are not only annoying but also that the program that generates them is started every time a user session is started and has a footprint on the resources of the system (memory, CPU).

How to remove all this?

(And other annoying running propgrams and popups?)
