Yes, AcroRead is here mainly to support
some rare & proprietary Adobe PDF extensions,
e. g. look at bug #944953 (definitely a curious one).

Bug description:
Please add 'acroread' package to the Partner repository for Ubuntu
Saucy and Trusty.
lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu Trusty Tahr (development branch)
Release: 14.04
apt-cache policy acroread
acroread:
Installed: 9.5.5-1raring1
Candidate: 9.5.5-1raring1
Version table:
*** 9.5.5-1raring1 0

What is expected to happen in a new install of either Xubuntu Saucy or
Trusty, is acroread is available once the Partner repository is
enabled.
What happens instead is it's not available as per
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acroread .
WORKAROUND: In Saucy, a work around is to install the deb files from
Precise.
WORKAROUND: In Trusty, install wine1.7 from Wine PPA
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wine/+archive/ppa and install Adobe
Reader 9.5.0 Windows 7 English from www.adobe.com/reader.
Attempted failed work arounds for Trusty amd64:
1) It crashes consistently Installing package nspluginwrapper, then download and install:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acroread/9.5.5-1raring1/+build/4580418/+files/acroread_9.5.5-1raring1_amd64.deb
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/139929201/acroread-bin_9.5.5-1raring1_i386.deb
or:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acroread/9.5.5-1raring1/+build/4580419/+files/acroread_9.5.5-1raring1_i386.deb
2) Download the file from www.adobe.com/reader and attempt to run it:
sudo ./AdbeRdr9.5.5-1_i486linux_enu.bin
sudo: ./AdbeRdr9.5.5-1_i486linux_enu.bin: command not found
3) Attempted to download Adobe provided .deb from:
ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/unix/9.x/9.5.5/enu/AdbeRdr9.5.5-1_i386linux_enu.deb
acroread
