Message #00010
Downpatrick
As a bit of stress relief between simulations, I've touched up enough of the
code that the Sympy Tutorial is (mostly) replicable in Aesthete [
http://www.philtweir.co.uk/aesthete/wiki/pmwiki.php?n=Documentation.AestheteSympyTutorial]
Also, as I've now got a server (apparently in Paris), I'm just hosting
it
there for simplicity and since I've root access when needed.
The docs need tidied up and considerably expanded, but the main focus is
this Tutorial, as it forms a simple set of tests and a useful introduction
for a new user. The applications in the Tutorial have prompted a couple of
relatively minor UI changes. Feedback appreciated.
State of play in Glypher :
* GlyphMaker pretty unreliable, but has basic functionality
* Only 3 major files with basic docstrings throughout; Sphinx docs buildable
- preliminary tests carried out
* Copying of entities now generally achieved through XML (rather than
deepcopy), to prompt XML reliability improvements; saving/opening XML files
consequently more reliable
* Number of simple bug-fixes in last month
* Lin alg very basic and unreliable
* Toolbox needs reorganized
* SLOW
However, once this Tutorial works reliably, I'd be keen to push the version
from Armagh to Downpatrick (0.2), as achieving this would have moved us to a
place where, say, accepting bug-reports would be useful. Until that point,
it would be like asking for a tree in a forest whereas, ideally, after that
point it would be more like asking for a tree in a garden. You may be
surrounded by them, but at least there's some grass. Optimistically, I guess
1.0 would be the Serengeti. In any case, 0.2, a minor milestone.
On the topic of version names - the 0.x series are the county towns of
Northern Ireland in alphabetical order: Antrim [precursor], Armagh
[pre-usable], Downpatrick [prototype; very basic functionality],
Enniskillen, Coleraine, Omagh. Conveniently, this fixes us at 6 minor
version numbers before 1.0.
As series names, I actually quite like Forest for 0.x and Serengeti for 1.x,
but input welcome.
Request: please try this as a fresh build to make sure there aren't any
omitted files or set-up assumptions accidentally built in - I haven't had
the opportunity to do so, but will soon.
Finally, once Downpatrick is ready, that would be a good point to publicize
this on, say, DunLUG for some external input.
