I downloaded 0.41 recently. I'm using 0.43 now, but the same error happens:

birdfont <file>
ctrl-E  => tries to use <file> as directory

*also:*

birdfont
(load file)
ctrl-E => tries to use <file> as directory

This sequence will result in correct behavior:
birdfont <file>
(save ad, click <file>)
ctrl-E  =>  writes .ttf, .eot and .svg files in same dir
