Hm, I did a full clean install of Snow Leopard, then installed V1.7
from the official installer and had that error (my python symlinks are
all fine using "which"). I did have a freshly installed macports, but
with only two ports and nothing python in there. However manually
deleting everything in site-packages and reinstalling seems to have
fixed it; I don't understand how that worked as V1.7 installed into
2.5 site-packages not 2.6???

Anyway, you solved my problems, so thank you, and also many thanks for
a working up-to-date snow leopard installer!
