You might want to consider compiling a static build of Subversion 1.6 and linking against it instead; 1.4 is *really* old…

Just to be clear, that shouldn't be necessary. I sent some patches to the Subvertpy list which ought to fix the errors.

(I stated in the summary of my patch series that I don't have access to a 10.5 box. I just remembered that this is technically inaccurate; I do have access to such a box, but it weighs about 20kg and is stashed away in a closet. The end result is the same, though: I could reproduce the errors just fine on 10.6 using the 10.5 SDK.)
