We plan to keep it simple, so we made the "default type". I agree it's not perfect, but we don't plan to change this for v6.1.
 I would suggest to do this in a separate module.
If someone wants to contribute, please assign to you and reopen the bug.

Bug description:
Normally you should have option to define several Address Types per address, because it is common to have the same address for Invoice and Delivery. So in this case it there should be another address defined, so in other places may render confusion.

Moreover now there is no type field shown on Address tree view.
