Which browser you are using ?
In firefox I am not facing this problem.
I have tried with .py, .jpg, .ppt files and they are opening in proper application.

Bug description:
  When downloading an attachment from the right sidebar, the file should be opened with the correct application should.

For example:

 * an image download should open the default image viewer
 * an openoffice document should launch OpenOffice
