Actually, the supported version[1] should be >= 8.2 , but we really test it so 
far on 8.4 and 9.0 servers.

We will fix the debian package.

[1] we are careful not to write any unconditional 8.4 expressions

  The 6.0 Debian package depends on postgresql-client >= 8.4 whereas
  Debian stable (Lenny) only has postgresql-client version 8.3. Is v8.4
