The search is based on "Categories", to quote the UI.  When I look at
the list of categories (Configuration > Address Book > Partner
Categories), they are listed with their full name.  It is natural to
assume that this is what I will be searching on.

If there is going to be an insistence on the category name and the
parent category being considered separately, then this should be
consistent.  There should be a column for category name, and a column
for parent category in the Partner Categories list, or the search should
be on full category name.

Currently, it would seem that the only way to fulfil my original
requirement (searching for all "OpenERP Partners" in the demo data)
would be to add them all to both the Starter/Basic/Gold category to
which they belong _and_ to the OpenERP Partners category.  This seems
obtuse, and I don't understand how you cannot consider this to be a
usability bug.

Title:
  Partner category search only operates on leaf category name

Status in OpenERP Modules (addons):

Bug description:
  The below assumes using the GTK client, as the web client currently
  has issues searching partners by category (bug 714610).

  Steps to reproduce:
    1) Load a database containing Partners in Partner Categories (the demonstration data works fine for this; I will assume you're using that from here on in).
    2) Navigate to the Customers view (Sales > Address Book > Customers).
    3) Enter "openerp" into the Categories field and press Search.

  Observed behaviour:
    No results.

  Expected behaviour:
    The list of all customers who are in the "Customer / OpenERP Partners" category or its children (i.e. "Customer / OpenERP Partners / Gold", "Customer / OpenERP Partners / Basic", "Customer / OpenERP Partners / Starter").

    Server and GTK client 6.0.1.
