OK I have solved the error on my system

For Linux based the system the backup error is caused by file and folder
permissions ..

I did a complete reinstall and made sure of the user that runs openerp
and folder permissions

I can now safely back in both the GTK and web-client .

I would like to collaborate with someone about this .

  Backup database function broken

Status in OpenERP Modules (addons):
  New

Bug description:
  On ver 6.0.1 on Ubuntu and other Linux distro's the backup database from the client or web-client 
  makes a 0 bit file with nothing in the file ..
  The server log states
   [2011-01-31 19:30:10,599][?] INFO:web-services:DUMP DB: newandimproved
  [2011-01-31 19:31:59,879][?] INFO:web-services:DUMP DB: newandimproved

  Also it can be reproduced on a full reinstall with no extra modules .
