Yes you are absolutely right about the issue and we are aware about
this, actually this is rather an upstream bug in pygtk where we already
have post https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/695674 related to this.
For ubuntu you can set your themes visual effects to None. but for
windows it still does not solve the problem.

  cursor focus problem in GTK (window)

Status in OpenERP GTK Client:
  New

Bug description:
  In editable tree view(o2m field), my second column is m2o and when I select one record from m2o pop up window, after selection cursor focus must be on next line in the first column.
  But I try many version of GTK in Window, the cursor lost the focus from editable tree view (o2m field).
  I've tried to disable all the visual effect in Window , but it still dose not work
