Hello,

You're right, the new version of base_crypt now performs the encryption
of password seamlessly as soon as you install it. (Practically, it
happens at the next RPC call, which is triggered by the confirmation
screen after the module installation :-))

Thanks for reporting, this has been fixed in trunk by revision  4984

  For your existing user base, the removal of the cleartext passwords occurs the first time
  a user logs into the database, after installing base_crypt.

  IMHO the password is encrypted on installation of base_crypt (which is
  good) not on first login
