Let me throw some light on this. You statement *before is was locked* is
absolutely right but did you had your fields.float show you the numbers
with *Thousand Separators* before ......No

We had such issues reported(almost 6-7 see duplicates) in trunk from the users of OpenERP who were missing this feature:https://bugs.launchpad.net/openobject-client/+bug/697625 (Well comment #1 is from you *+1 I'm totally agree.*)
So to full fill this feature the trunk client had this feature implemented at revision-info :1808 nch@xxxxxxxxxxx-20110131102817-3dby0q45bwrivdol which was eventually back ported to stable too at 1887:hda@hda-laptop-20110907064055-i0qe4wr0o6ybgg6p

BTW your text values will not be accepted by the widgets they will
default to 0.0 or 0
