You're right, it's better to use the Widget layer because left/right clicks for this applet are already used.
We know that this applet needs to be rewritten with another tool than GTK. But it seems that the new systray (of Gnome, KDE, etc.) will be better and more usable by other apps according to new freedesktop rules :)

Bug description:
This can hardly be a bug report but rather a suggestion (excuse me but I found no other way to tell you about it).

The systray applet, when on the dock, is good for hiding the several icons which has gone to the system tray. Unhiding them is a simple matter of (left) clicking. But the systray applet on the dock would be easier to use if the systray dialog could be hidden ALSO by left clicking and not by middle clicking. I've seen that this is the case with the terminal applet.
