I use the musicPlayer applet with banshee and the following configuration:
Player to control: Banshee
Steal ... : [x]
Actions on click and middle-click: Play/Pause on click, NExt on middle-click

Show an info-bubble? [ ]
Animation when music changes: wobbly

Information to display: Time elapsed
Display album's art cover? [x]
Allow cairo dock to download missing covers? [ ]
use 3d themes [ ]

Banshee displays the covers perfectly. All other applet functions work.

Banshee: 1.5.4 (Daily PPA)

Used PPA: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/cairo-dock-team/ppa/ubuntu karmic main

Ubuntu 9.10 64bit

$ cairo-dock -v
2.1.3-6
