I see your point. Possible to have it as an option?

BTW, clicking plugin's icon makes mail app launch. IMHO this is the app
icon behavior.

Bug description:
  The mail plugin icon worked as a launcher before. If a mail program was running, it used to indicate it with a triangle (as other launchers do). Please restore the old behavior.
