A further update: I tried running the script on jamiet, and it got past the trouble spot without incident. (It did terminate early at a later point, I believe because I was trying to set it up with 10.1.16.0/22 as the internal address block, and multiple IP addresses on that range were already in use, which probably gave MAAS fits.)
