I tried the:

sudo rm -r ~/.adobe
sudo apt-get clean

and then reinstalled with no success.  So, I completely wiped the 10.4
Ubuntu partition from the laptop and installed 10.10 as a net new rather
than upgrade.  This eliminated the issue.  Of course, the net new
install was inconvenient, but it worked.
