Got plymouth 0.8.2-2ubuntu5.1 installed but no, acroread does still not work.
But the warning has changed a little bit:

(acroread:5593): GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (11659)
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "gnomesegvhandler": /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libgnomesegvhandler.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64
