I was not made aware of the problem of lack of memory (heck, I still
can't find the logs of the upgrade on my system) - the only message I
got was with g++ not installing properly, followed eventually by a
message that upgrading could not continue. Still, after reboot, the
system acted as if it were in 11.10 (aside from lightDM not being
properly installed (missing dependency on some package when upgrading
from 11.04), forgot which bug that was but it was already reported
separately by someone else; and aside from not installing many other
upgrades, although fortunately those upgrades were in cache and a sudo
apt-get upgrade was sufficient to fix that problem).

So I suppose I should file a bug for "lack of memory during upgrade
process is not reported to the user, leaving him or her completely
ignorant of this basic fact."

This may be due to me installing various flash plugins during the
lifetime of my system since 8.04. At some point in the past, amd64
version flashplugin either didn't work, didn't exist, or was buggy, so
I force-installed a i386 version of this. Recent adobe-flashplugin
seems to work properly on amd64, so afterwards I forcibly removed
adobe-flashplugin:i386.

What can I do to help debug this further?

Sincerely,
AmkG
