I'm don't like that we need to jump hoops with WAIT_CMD in order to make the linter happy, which is supposed to make life easier. I suppose you had to do that because the expansion of the SSH_CMD array was not happening as desired within quotes.

I'll re-read the Special Parameters section in bash(1) and see if I can suggest a different solution.
