The failure of the icon to appear in the menu item for clicompanion was
because the clicompanion.desktop file had an Icon= line referring to the
icon named clicompanion, but the supplied .png file was named
clicompanion.16.png .

Adding the trailing 16 to this file solves the issue.

A bugfix branch has been created at lp:~clicompanion-
devs/clicompanion/bug-608653 containing this change, and a request to
merge it into the clicompanion trunk has been made.
