Hi, I fixed up a few things and proposed a branch for merging into this one.

merge that in, please.

Then, the remaining issue that I see is
  (_exists, contents) = self._read_conf(filename)

there is no '_read_conf' anywhere. I thought perhaps you intended on _read_hostname_conf but that doesnt look right.
