Project Update

Hi cloud-init community,

Six months have passed since the last cloud-init summit and I wanted to give a brief update on the project.

First, the transition to GitHub has brought a huge improvement in our process and ability to land community contributions. In addition to the review guidelines [1] the team has implemented an internal review rotation process. This will allow us to get eyes on reviews more quickly to ensure merges get closed out. The number of open reviews has decreased dramatically over the last couple of weeks as a result of this.

While we still require the CLA to be signed, we have worked to get a GitHub account field added to the Canonical CLA. This has greatly simplified the process. See the HACKING document [2] for more information.

Next, the team at Canonical is growing! We are closing in on hiring two additional developers for the team. While the developers will work on a couple projects the extra help on cloud-init will continue to aid in reviewing merge requests and delivering new features.

I expect we will release 20.2 in the coming months. For Ubuntu, we will SRU 20.1 shortly after Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) releases at the end of this month.

Finally, I want to thank everyone for hanging out in the #cloud-init IRC channel on Freenode. The discussions are becoming more and more lively and it is nice to see more community involvement. I would also like to have another cloud-init summit in August or September. While an in-person summit seems unlikely right now, we will consider having a virtual summit this year.

Thanks,
Josh
