It seemed easier to install the NVidia binaries from their site, so I
ended up doing that. Compiz still did not start. Then I thought about
this line:

Found no decorator to start

So I installed compiz-gnome using synpatic.

Now compiz/visual effects works as normal. Thanks for setting me on the
right track. It would've been a nightmare trying to get this to work
without knowing my display drivers had issues too.
