You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Karmic updates from today create gnome instabilities. Sometimes gnome
completely fails ending with a shell prompt after reboot.

Other times gdm presents and a login is accepted and gnome-wm crashes
leaving apps + desktop running with no window manager.

Repeatedly running gnome-wm will eventually bring up gnome-wm.

Executing these commands to deinstall/reinstall compiz appears to have
no effect...

   apt-get --purge remove compiz compiz-core compiz-gnome compiz-plugins compiz-wrapper
   apt-get install compiz compiz-core compiz-gnome compiz-plugins compiz-wrapper
