Definitely some kind of driver problem, sounds similar to a driver
nvidia users have with certain compiz settings. For a workaround you
could login to these users with the Failsafe GNOME session and change
System->Preferences->Appearance Visual Effects tab to None. After that
you should be able to login to these users without having compiz start.
