If you open up System->Preferences->CompizConfig Settings Manager
(install the compizconfig-settings-manager package if you don't have it)
and go to Preferences (bottom right) then click on Reset to Defaults
does this continue to happen? It sounds like you have a corrupted
configuration for compiz and this will reset it back to system defaults.

The desktop switching system seems to not work with Compiz anymore.
