I agree that it's probably a driver issue, but I don't know why. It
works perfectly until that transition, so something obviously happens at
that point that causes the texture to be broken in some way.

I would check the live cd as soon as I have the time, except for the
fact that the proprietary nVidia driver requires the kernel modules,
which requires a reboot (as I understand it), which in turn means that
you can't do it from the live cd.
