@fowie - What BIOS version do you have?

I should add that the Panel Brightness Adjust applet and the Power
Manager brightness adjust do not work also.

If I add "nomodeset acpi_backlight=vendor" to my grub kernel commands
this allows me to use the Panel and Power management brightness sliders,
however, the fn brightness keys still cause system freeze.
