Does this behavior persist with older BIOS versions? I've looked at the
dump of the DSDT table for the 4810 v1.28 and there are 200 over errors
in it that the Intel compiler picks up (my 3810 had 0 after I fixed some
typos) - I'm guessing that could have something to do with it. It would
take a while to go through all of them though ;)

That said, does this bug exist on both the ATI and Intel versions of the
4810? if not, it could be a graphics driver issue (I would hope for this
since that's much easier to fix~ :))

Another thing you could possibly try is the Kubuntu live cd. Even if
you're not crazy about KDE, it could be useful for debugging - KDE4 has
compositing enabled by default - for e.g. if brightness works with kde4
and effects are on, it's not likely to be the graphics driver.@DanL:
