This problem cropped up again after a fresh Karmic install.  Managed to
track down the issue to the Compiz 3d windows plugin.

Ensuring that 3d Windows->Misc Options->3d Only On Mouse Rotate is
checked resolves the issue.  Unchecked will ensure the windows are 3d
during unfold cube, hence the disparity between windows and desktop and
the zooming.
