It still doesn't work for me in karmic.
I have a Radeon controller:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] [1002:5960] (rev 01)

Only one user can have the desktop effects enabled.
If I run compiz --replace on second user account I get the message:

"software rasterizer detected abortingaborting" and metacity is used
instead of compiz.

If I logout first user and logon second user alone, desktop effects can
be enabled.

So in summary situation in karmic is exactly the same than in jaunty
