DIFFERENT WORKAROUND worked fr me as well. I am a novice to Ubuntu. A
note: I had "compiz --replace -c emerald &" in my startup, probably
because I use Mac4Lin. I tried and substitute it with the simpler
"compiz --replace" and now the settings of compiz are saved and
everything work after I login again and also after I reboot.
