For me this only happens when compiz is activated. I tried the old fix
of gconf-editor and changing the cursor theme in compiz but this had no
effect, i.e., the /apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/cursor_theme
key.

+ Schizophrenic cursors. Desktop cursor theme changes from the user selected theme. However the application cursor theme is correct.
