[Bug 555393] [NEW] ubuntu 10.04 beta desktop effects could not be enabled

I have been running ubuntu 10.04 since alpha 2 and the compiz functions
have been working fine. I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 with an Intel 965
graphics card. On updating to the beta version, compiz quit working!
When I open System-Preferences-Appearance and click on Visual Effects-
Custom the page blinks on and off several times and then I get the
message Desktop Effects could not be enabled and I have to use Force
Quit to close the Appearance tab. I have had 3D graphics enabled since
Ubuntu 8.10 with no problems on this dell inspiron and now compiz has
suddenly quit working.
