I had the same issue - an update to metacity this morning (~8am BST)
removed compiz. I didn't realise this so lost compiz when I next
rebooted. However, I've managed to reinstall them now and compiz is back
working.

That said, should updates to metacity actually force the removal of
compiz packages? Perhaps it would be nicer to say you can't install the
metacity update if it isn't compatible with compiz etc etc?
