[Bug 568462] [NEW] desktop background broken

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

New install.  Desktop background was black, couldn't change it.  Problem
went away when I change Desktop Background - Appearance Preferences -
Visual Effects to 'none'.   Normal and extra don't work.   Samsung 22 in
monitor.
