After a restart from a partial upgrade from Karmic to Lucid, neither
compiz nor metacity are started on login - so no decorations or window
manager.

metacity --replace would work, but can't always get focus into gnome-
Terminal, so easiest thing is to go to Appearance > visual effects and
switch between metacity and compiz.  But visual effects do not remain on
when logging in again.

Have purged and reinstalled compiz, compiz-gnome and lots of metacity
and gdm packages, but problem persists.
