same problem .. blank screen after log on .. right click gets the entire
desktop immediately.

but neither a new installation, nor a Matrox card in my case. 
Mine is ATI FireGL5200 and I was using this install of lucid for more than a week 

I did do some tweaking with the "appearance" I installed a theme from
gnome.org (Alphacube Metacity)

I also changed the wallpaper and firefox theme (hopefully those wouldn't
cause this problem)
