I can confirm also that my desktop is very unresponsive with the latest
ubuntu release 10.04. The issue seems to happen randomly and can be
present right after boot-up or later. Since there are times when
everything works responsive, I do not blame my processors performance
capability.

It helped to switch the appearance preferences to None instead of
Normal, but I do not yet have long term experience with that workaround.
