I have the same bug in Mint 10. Murali's temporary workaround didn't
work for me. All windows were opening at the bottom. Dave's link worked.

However if it helps someone here is what triggered the problem it for
me: installed nvidia's restricted drivers. Before installing the drivers
everything was fine.
