Couple of comments:

First, for me this always coincides with text in text-entry boxes "auto-
highlighting" itself, so that subsequent keypresses erase what I have
already typed.

Second, when experiencing this bug, not only does the awesome bar fail
to auto-complete; it also often drops letters if I type too fast.

Third, I can always fix the problem by pressing 'alt-Tab' twice.

Fourth, I frequently (but not always) find that when I alt-Tab, the
Update Manager has popped under my firefox session.

Fifth, this also happens with less frequency to LyX.  Except in LyX, I
can't enter any text anywhere until I alt-Tab twice.
