Ok.  So, for a work around I think we can start compiz with the
vblank_mode=0 environment set and vsync disabled; this will stop compiz
being blocked waiting on vsync, but in return allow some tearing to
occur.

With vblank_mode=0 I can toggle dpms on/off with a GL screensaver
running - which seems to be a trigger for this - until my GPU locks up.
Which is another bug, not this one :/.
