About 5 minutes after posting this I found a kind of workaround that
seems to improve things a lot:

in ccsm (compizconfig-settings-manager)
in the composite plugin, deactivate auto detection and set the refresh to something like 60.

restart compiz by doing compiz --replace

also in nvidia-settings, check if the powermode is set to performance (in the powermizer entry of the menu to the left)
