Confirming for Compiz; in my case (running Unity) I log in, the
workspace background is painted and that's it. SSH-ing in I can see the
following in /var/log/syslog:

Jun 10 08:11:28 xango3 kernel: [50816.673566] compiz[28361]: segfault at
20 ip 00007fe46e30c57e sp 00007fffaae3f380 error 4 in
libanimation.so[7fe46e2b9000+6e000]


I also see these entries in ~/.xsession-error:
